Homeschool (ENGLISH) - Shavuot, First Fruits & Zionist Art

Shavuot is celebrated as both the time of the giving of the Torah at Sinai, and the celebration of the land’s first fruits, or Bikkurim. The agricultural theme of Bikkurim plays a very important role in modern Zionism, and bikkurim is celebrated in the Kibbutzim. So what is it really about?

About the Event

Did you grow up eating Cheesecake on Shavuot? Playing with water-guns? Or studying all night?

The Jewish holiday of Shavuot is a tricky one. There are different parts to it, and they don't necessarily fit at first glance. It's considered to be the date of the giving of the Torah at Sinai, the "Ten Commandments" that are now known throughout the West.

The part that we're least in touch with is the agricultural aspect, which had a huge impact both on the early zionist artists from the Bezalel Art Academy, and the secular Kibbutzim. In fact, "Bikkurim" of the biblical festival of "First Fruits" at the end of a treaterous harvest season, has been turned into a secular holiday with dancers and tractors in the Kibbutzim.

Let's dive into the story of Shavuot from its agritulcural, art and cultural aspects, and learn to appreciate what inspires the early zionists who celebrated the land.

Schedule is listed in Israeli Time.
