Virtual Museum Tours and Online Archaeology Courses

Nachliel Selavan is a professional museum tour guide, entrepreneur, educator, and expert in Biblical archaeology and the history of the ancient Near East. Prior to the COVID19 pandemic, Nachliel was giving tours in the MET, also known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art based in New York City, as well as providing walking tours in Jerusalem, Israel. After most museums closed, he quickly pivoted to delivering virtual tours, creatively using Google Street View and Zoom to expand his tours beyond the borders of his zip code. Going virtual allows Nachliel to now lead tours in museums throughout the world (virtually) from London to Toronto to Chicago to Tel Aviv. He also launched a new website, a YouTube channel, and a Happs account where his prolific output of content digital platforms, attracts him a diverse and international clientele. Paid courses, a podcast, and other programs are also in the works. I wanted to have Nachliel on the show not only because I’m a history buff and think he is in a particularly interesting niche, but because I think his story serves as a good example of how people who used to do business solely in physical locations can successfully pivot during a tough time when in-person activities are extremely limited or non-existent. His story also exemplifies how people can leverage their knowledge and skills to digital mediums, which should provide inspiration to many of my listeners who are going through a similarly difficult period of transition or who wish to utilize the Internet and social platforms to start or save their businesses. This podcast also has an eLearning focus and I think it’s pretty amazing how Nachliel was able to transition from an on-location museum tour guide to an eLearning content creator and entrepreneur. So many holidays. We know the famous joke “they tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat!” - which is quite inaccurate, of course. There are just so many holidays that you can’t see the forest for the feasts.

Shavuot is when we received the Torah at Mount Sinai. Its other name “Bikkurim” or “First Fruits”, indicates an agricultural festival. In this two-part tour we will addresses different aspects of the Jewish year cycle, specifically this time between Pesach to Shavuot.

The first tour explores the holiday-and-festivity-rich time of year - which sees many expressions of redemption and independence - from the Exodus to the battles of Modern Israel: Memorial Day, Independence Day and Yom Yerushalayim, and finally - Bikkurim day.

The second part deals with the counting of the Omer (Sefirat ha-Omer) and Lag ba-Omer’s most important characters: Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Shimon b. Yohai and Shimon b. Kokhba (ben Kosiba). We will explore how these dramatic personae impacted two millennia of Jewish attitudes towards the exile, and how they reshaped the image of Jewish glory and Zionism.

The Israel Museum holds the “crown jewels” of Israel’s archaeology: The Dead Sea Scrolls, monuments built by our ancient kings, and lots of ancient coins.

The inspiration for many of the Bank of Israel’s coin and banknote designs are to be found within this national treasure. But there is much more to the design than their connection to historic artifacts.

Every coin has three sides, and we will explore the side that tells the story behind the artifacts, what they mean and why they were chosen as designs. We’ll explore the history of money and currency thousands of years ago, and learn about propaganda and forgeries, politics and philosophy.

This tour is from 90-120 min in the Israel Museum. It is also available as a family tour for kids ages 6 and up, from 60-75 min.

“In every generation a person must regard themselves as though they personally had gone out of Egypt” Mishna, Pesachim 10:5

It is incumbent upon us to re-experience the Exodus in every generation, and adapt its concepts to our current reality.

Ancient Egypt does not need any introductions. It is inspirational in every way: From the Pyramids and the Sphinx to the mummies and mythologies, from King Tut and Ramses the Great to the Nile River and its amazing wildlife.

This tour explores many facets of Ancient Egyptian culture and archaeology. It examines and explores different aspects of this mysterious culture and engages in discussions about its relevance to the Exodus story and the modern world.

This is a 2 hour tour in many museums: The Israel and Bible Lands Museums, Jerusalem, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Chicago Oriental Institute, to name a few in the US; as well as the British Museum in London.

It is available as a standalone 45-60 min virtual tour where you can travel to Egypt and many sites and museums.

It is available as a series of tours and lectures in person and online, for adult learning and communities. Around Pesach I offer a three-part series for kids called “Pesach sTourytime™”.

It is also available as a lecture and in-person presentation, including the virtual tour.

The Roman Jewish Wars - the Great Revolt (66-73/4 CE) and the Bar Kokhba Revolt (132-136 CE) - were failed revolutions. Their impact has changed us forever, and there is no place like the Israel museum to bring those stories to life.

Learn about Herod the Great and how he rebuilt Jerusalem's Temple to rival the greatests temples in the Roman world. From the Fall of Jerusalem to the Fall of Beitar, there are very important lessons to learn from the coins, statues, structures and items that have been found from this period. In the end, we will see how some of them inspired the artists of the 19-20th centuries, as they envisioned the revival of the people of Israel in their homeland.

Archaeology: Sefer Hoshea - Nachliel Selavan

This video is part of the Sefer Study series. This is an analysis of the Archaeology of the Sefer by Nachliel Selavan MA. Ed (www.museumtours.co.il) - more info below. Archaeology Snapshot is a discussion on the location, timeline, main characters and highlights from history and archaeology, for each Sefer in Tanach. Hoshea begins the “twelve prophets” or תרי עשר, which span a period of over 300 years. Amos is actually the first prophet, but Hoshea is chosen to open the series for thematic and poetic reasons. Hoshea is probably from the tribe of Reuven, and he operated in the Kingdom of Israel, during the lifetime of the prophets Amos, Yeshayahu and Micha; his prophecy dealt with the moral decay in the kingdom of Yisrael, mostly, and he rebuked the over-reliance on Assyria, the rising world superpower. Archaeology: Sefer Melachim I - Nachliel Selavan

This video is part of the Sefer Study series. This is an analysis of the Archaeology of the Sefer by Nachliel Selavan. Archaeology Snapshot is a discussion on the location, timeline, main characters and highlights from history and archaeology, for each Sefer in Tanach. Sefer Melachim I is about the transition of power from King David to his house, and the establishment of the Davidic dynasty and a unified monarchy. This unity did not last for long, the kingdom split into a northern kingdom of Israel, and a southern, smaller, kingdom of Judah. The notion Yehuda ve-Yisrael, until today, tells us that this fundamental issue hasn’t been resolved yet. The 12 Tribes have not all been reunited. This episode covers a few key discussions in archaeology: The Kingdom and Temple of Solomon - his international relationships, his usage of resources, and materials, in running the country and building the Temple. The split into two kingdoms, and some of the features of each kingdom. Shoshenq’s campaign, assuming it may be the Pharaoh Shishak, is a lynchpin in Archaeology. This campaign, which took place in year 5 of Rehobam, or roughly 925 BCE, helps in the discussion of the historic chronology of Tanach. Check out the relevant articles below. Finally, the dealings of Eliyahu haNavi with the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and its internationally involved king Ahab and his Pheonician wife, Izebel, and more transitions of power: Hazael will be king of Aram Damascus, Yehu will wipe out the House of Omri, and Elisha will replace Eliyahu. Archaeology: Sefer Shofetim - Nachliel Selavan

This video is part of the Sefer Study series. This is an analysis of the Archaeology of the Sefer by Nachliel Selavan. Archaeology Snapshot is a discussion on the location, timeline, main characters and highlights from history and archaeology, for each Sefer in Tanach. Sefer Shofetim deals with Iron Age I - the ~200 year transitional period between entering the Land (and the collapse of the Late Bronze Age) - and the first Kingdom in Israel. This episode features an overview of the Sefer, and highlights the Battle of Sisera and the important locations around it, as well as a relevant winery. It also covers Shimson (Samson) and the Philistines, and another relevant winery. The Philistines are an important topic, and Nachliel has been on some of the excavations to Biblical Gath (Tell es-Safi), where he participated for a few days in the dig, and also interviewed Prof. Aren Maeir of Bar Ilan University, Prof. Jill Katz of Stern College - Yeshiva University, and a few other archaeologists. He also transcribed those interviews and visited the Museum of Philistine Culture.
